This is a precarious time of year for Minnesota gardeners. It's the time of year that we hold our breath a little every time we pull up the 10 day forecast, and don't let it out with relief until we see that all of the overnight lows start with the number 4 or above. Frost is possible at any time now (by this time each of the past two growing seasons, I had already found myself outside late at night wrestling with sheets and blankets to cover up my tomatoes), but fortunately (hopefully), this year it appears we are on track to finish off the month without the threat of frost.
This is good news for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the last plantings of radishes, spinach, and lettuce that started to sprout last week. It's a bit of a gamble, planting this late in the season in Minnesota, but with a growing season as short as ours, it's a chance I'm willing to take in order to make the most of the season.
