Grow It Forward Friday

A couple of weeks ago I signed up for the Grow it Forward Heirloom Seed Contest.  The challenge is to grow at least three heirloom varieties and document their progress, from seed to harvest, on Your Garden Show (think Facebook for your garden).  There are four phases (seed, plant, tend, and harvest), and the gardens with the most comments at the end of each phase will have a chance to win prizes from some fab garden sponsors. There will also be final voting phase, where you can vote for your favorite gardens.  The time frame for the contest is going to be a little challenging for this Minnesota gardener (the harvest phase ends July 31, when my garden is usually just getting going), but even without any expectations of winning a prize, I am excited to take on the challenge.

Since I'll be documenting my heirloom veggies for the contest, I will also be dedicating my Friday posts to the heirlooms as well. There will, of course, be garden updates, but I'm also excited to share some additional heirloom tidbits, recipes, and some of my own reflections on why I'm finding myself more and more drawn to heirloom varieties. I hope you'll check back each Friday to follow along.

If you're interested in checking out my heirloom garden, it can be found here.  It's not much to look at right now, but it will get there as we move into our growing season.  In the meantime, indulge in a little garden envy by checking out the participants in some of the more southern locations.  And if you're really inspired, join in with your own heirloom garden this year!
